You need a ladder to use that ladder, which has to be placed on top of a staircase. It’s like meta steps.

I don’t think that’s a fire escape. If the building is on fire, the roof is about the worst place to go. That’s just a basic roof access door.

Once, at a hotel, I jumped and climbed up one, then went up on the roof in the middle of the night. They didn’t keep the hatch locked, because staff needed to get up there, so we just swung it back and climbed up. We hung out on the roof for a while and admired the highrises around us. It was awesome.

Can’t be a fire escape. You would never want to escape to the roof during a fire. It’s just an access hatch for your roof/hvac techs. Facilities guys travel with ladders, know the deal. Make that high up so no random idiots climb up onto the roof.

Also, no signage makes for a poor fire escape...
